Lusubilo Music Centre recruits nine

In its pursuit to promote music talent in the country, Karonga-based Lusubilo Music Centre has finally confirmed the recruitment of nine up-and-coming artists who will undergo a four-year music training course at the centre.

The nine were recruited after they passed several tests in addition to auditions, which were held on December 20.

The include Judith Mhango and Maggie Kang’ombe, Happy Nyirenda, KilhotetiSelemani, Dickson Kanyika, Divine Burton, ThokoChilanga, StainlyNqumayo and MordanKalua.

According to Lusubilo Centre manager ManaseChisiza, the nine have so far started their classes.

“We have finalised this year recruitment, the nine enrolled demonstrated all the qualities required to be admitted at the centre,” said Chisiza.

The centre founder, Professor ChungjaAgness Kim, said it is his dream to nurture more talent currently at disposal in the country.

“My aim is to produce as much music talent as I can. It is clear that Malawi has plenty of promising music talent that just require to be imparted with basic music skills,” Kim said.

Lusubilo Music Centre is an art institution under St Mary’s Parish of the Roman Catholic Church.

The institution has been training young people in music since its inception in 2000.

While learning, the students at the centre are also exposed to practical activities with the institution’s band Lusubilo, which is now famous for African pop and jazz music.

The band have performed in several competitions in the country and won the 2010 Chibuku ‘Road to Fame’ national championship.

Meanwhile, members from the band are in South Korea studying music at National University of Korea.

The three are saxophonist Phillip Mwanjasi, trumpeter LimbaniMunthali and lead vocalist EllahMwanjasi.

They are studying a four-year course in classical music and are expected to graduate with a bachelors degree in music.

Singer and guitarist Rebecca Mwalwenje, who has been the lead vocalist for Lusubilo Band, has graduated from the music centre.

Mwalwenje is currently performing with Lusubilo Band as a guest artist.

As of now, the artist has also featured in TiwongeHango’sMkaziWakumudzimusic video, which was shot in South Korea and Karonga.
